  The “Magic Bridge”

  0427 Crystal Lake Park 088-SH, by grizzly_lightning I completely forgot to write about my visit to the "magic bridge" last week. I heard about this spot on Birdnotes, one of the birding email groups I belong to. If you want to go, It's in Crystal Lake Park in Urbana. I'm not quite sure what the attraction is, but it's there. I spotted several different kinds of Warblers, Warbling Vireos, Carolina Wrens, Robins, Cardinals, Ruby-Crowned Kinglets, White-Crowned Sparrows, Grackles, Starlings, Red-Winged Blackbirds, Geese (and their babies), Mourning Doves and I think I heard an owl somewhere nearby.   Nice Light

  0430 Retention Pond 011-SH, by grizzly_lightning (Click photo for more info) I found a retention pond in town that is a bird magnet. Unfortunately the pond is surrounded by a chain-link fence. After birdwatching for a little more than a year, it has become easy to think "oh, just a sparrow"... or "come on, more geese?", but these common birds are still pretty cool to look at when you get some nice light on them. Heck... almost everything is cool to look at with nice light. Almost.

  The Falconer

  0421 Douglas Hart 278-SH, by grizzly_lightning (Click photo for more info) One of my favorite Saturday Night Live sketches is "The Falconer"... it's hilarious, but unfortunately there aren't any good clips of it online. I met real falconers today. I had no idea that people still did this. They trap immature raptors (falcons, hawks, owls, kestrels, etc.), raise them and then hunt with them. That's insane. I'm mystified by it... I might go out with this couple later this year to watch how it works.
