The saying goes "You're only as old as you feel." I feel like I'm getting older, but not old-old . But seriously, people... I get it. I'm getting older. Apparently someone has been trying to pound that in my head. Earlier last week, while photographing 18 & 19-year-olds at the Macon County Clerk's office registering to vote for the first time, the registrar behind the counter asked if I was documenting my son becoming an adult. The mother did look pretty young, but do I look old enough to have an 18-year-old son?!? I'm 27 now... so I would have been nine when ...

Happy Dog

I had to take Oscar to the vet already... he was biting and scratching his butt and dragging his hind end across the floor repeatedly. Add that to the fact that his breath smelled like poop and Google told me that he had a problem. Apparently have scent-making glands called anal sacs... kind of like a skunk, but on a smaller scale. I'm not going to get into details of this thing, but if you want to know more you can use Google. We were in and out in just a few minutes, and he seems to be feeling a lot better ...

Election 2008

With the election less than three weeks away some people still might not know who to vote for. I came across a link to Glassbooth, an online quiz that lets you pick the issues important to you, answer some questions about those issues and gives you a matching candidate followed by a second and third choice. Some sites I've seen do similar things, but this one will explain what the candidates think about the issues you choose. Interestingly, the candidate I match up with most (85% according to my answers) is not who you probably expect. I'll probably go with the number ...

I've heard of Gossip Girl, but I couldn't tell you a thing about it or any of the cast. And Dad, just because people your age are doing it doesn't make it cool.

World’s Biggest Basketball Practice

Illinois put on the World's Biggest Basketball Practice event right after the football game Saturday afternoon. It probably would have made for much better photos if all of the fans would have stayed to watch it. The university was expecting to have some 60,000+ fans stay after the football agme and watch 30 minutes of basketball. I'd say only a few thousand actually stayed for the whole thing. Minnesota 27 - Illinois 20

I got to shoot the Illinois homecoming game against Minnesota this past weekend. I thought I had some killer stuff from the first half, but a mixture of backlit-conditions, my 1.4x extender being a touch soft and heat waves radiating off of the field made everything a bit fuzzy. The photos looked great on the back of my camera and at one point I was about to text my boss and tell him I hit my quota of good shots. Luckily, I didn't. Everything looked like pure crap when I pulled it up on the laptop at halftime. Oh well... changed some ...

Fun Email

I'm trying to get back into Twitter as a way to post random thoughts that don't deserve a blog post or status update on Facebook. I decided to follow the two presidential candidates (That one & Maverick) feeds to see what they post because I'm interested in different uses for Twitter. Anyway, I got an email saying that Barack Obama is following me... thought is was kind of fun. Reminded me of that Barack Obama is Your New Bicycle site I wrote about a while ago.

Contest season - IAPEA

The Illinois Associated Press Editors Association also announced their awards last week. Since they haven't updated their site yet I'm posting a link to the Chicago Tribune story which has a full list of the winners (minus photos!). My boss, Kelly J. Huff, got second place feature photo for our size category... our paper as a whole won the General Excellence award, which looks at stories, headlines, editing, graphics, design and probably mostly photographs. I mean who looks at all of that other stuff? The Champaign, Springfield and Bloomington crews brought home a bunch of awards as well. I guess they give awards ...

Contest season - IPA

The Illinois Press Association awards were announced late last week and I wanted to say congrats to my friends who got some awards... Danny cleaned house in his division. Second place for photo series, first place feature photo and third place personality portrait. He talks about it on his Lifeworks Imaging blog... Peoria Journal Star photographer and EIU alum Fred Zwicky got first, second and third in photo series for his category... Carlos T. Miranda from the Pantagraph, our sister paper in Bloomington, took first place spot news in his category. My friends over in Springfield brought home a nice handful of awards. ...

I had a craving for some cookies while grocery shopping yesterday evening. I was going to grab a tube of the pre-made dough that you just throw in the oven and call it a night, but my awesome wife decided to make a batch for me... I love her in that apron... hopefully she still loves me when I gain fifty pounds this week from eating her cookies.
