General (0)I heard a mutual aid call come over the scanner at work last night for a fire just north of Decatur. Apparently our scanner at work doesn't pick up county fire traffic, because the large pole barn had been burning for almost an hour. After hitting almost every red light on the way to the scene I arrived to find the tail-end of a fire... a few hotspots and a lot of firemen resting after putting out the blaze. A county deputy directing traffic told me that the flames were phenomenal as the garage was fully engulfed. Looks like it's time to ...

08.24.08Obama-Rama
General (7)I had a pretty sweet spot on the media riser sandwiched among CNN, BBC, NBC News, Getty, Reuters, Bloomberg, Tribune, etc., for the big Obama-Biden rally in Springfield yesterday... apparently so sweet that none of these photos made it in today's paper. Oh well. It was a media frenzy that was pretty exciting to be a part of. It's not every day that a senator from your state running for what could be the first African-American president of the United States makes a campaign stop to announce his choice for vice-presidential candidate right in your back yard. 08.23.08Media Circus
General (5)I got to cover the big Obama rally in Springfield today where he named Joe Biden his choice for vice president... I had a pretty sweet spot for the whole thing, but I'm too exhausted to post all of my photos. So for now you get a picture taken by Robbie while we were waiting for the whole shindig to go down. I'll post a ton of photos tomorrow... but none of them will include the handsome devil in the blue polo shirt.

08.21.08Under Pressure
General (2)Mal's dad let me borrow his pressure washer so I could clean up the roof of our shed before painting it. I didn't realize how dirty it was until I started working on it. The more I play with the washer, the more I want to see what it would feel like to pressure wash my face. Maybe I'd never have to shave again...

General (1)Our yard seems to be a bug magnet. I'm pretty sure that all yards are this way, but this is the first time that I've ever had a yard of my own... so I think I notice a lot more things. I pulled my macro (Canon 100mm/2.8) out this afternoon before going to work so I could take pictures of a random flower that just started growing in the middle of our yard. This little winged guy was just resting on one of the petals on the flower. My knowledge of insect species is almost non-existent... so I have no idea what ...

08.21.08Doudna
General (1)I got a chance to visit the almost completed Doudna Fine Arts Center at EIU yesterday... holy moly. Joe, Brian and I went through the building after lunch while I was driving through the area for an assignment. This place is ridiculous. I'm excited to see what it does to the arts program on campus. I never took any art classes, but I shot some assignments out at the temporary facilities the students were using. Going from converted grocery stores to this brand new, beautifully designed building is quite a change. For more info on Antoine Predock, the architect behind the building, ...

08.18.08Insects
General (0)I found this little caterpillar crawling around on a patio chair I was painting yesterday. Apparently spray paint attracts insects. I didn't so any research or experimentation to come to that conclusion... I just made it up. Caterpillars are weird little creatures. Kind of like human babies... they're super ugly and scary but they turn into something better.

General (0)I set up my strobes to make sure everything was in working order and to test some lighting for a freelance portrait gig I did yesterday. My test model was not very cooperative. Next time I'll just spike her drink and take a bunch of scandalous photos while she's in a delirious stupor. Ahh... those were the good old days.

08.18.08Speedway
General (0)I got to spend a few hours at the Macon Speedway Saturday night for the Herald & Review 100. I was in a bad mood when I went and things didn't go as planned time-wise, so I was not too happy about it at the end of the night. Looking back at it I think I want to go back some time and just shoot some featurey behind the scenes stuff sometime. I'll probably go back as soon as I finish cleaning the dirt and mud from my teeth, ears and nostrils. They told me it would be dirty.... I wasn't ...
