Scott Strazzante's 14-year project on a family farm that was turned into a suburban subdivision came out as a multimedia piece this week. I am blown away at how much access he was given and how much time he has put in covering the two families. Web mistakes

So apparently my portfolio page hasn't been working for quite a while... have no fear. I fixed it last night. 99% of you (which equals probably three people) won't care what was wrong. But for my computer nerd friends (Josh) all I can say is I am an idiot. I had a PHP include in the wrong place and that screwed everything up. Web sites are a lot like women... you have to communicate in weird languages (HTML, CSS, PHP, AJAX or the rarely-documented language of emotions and feelings). Attack Dog

I went to an assignment in northwest Decatur Friday afternoon where I was greeted by this vicious, scary attack dog. She barked at our reporter and came right up to me like I was an old family friend. I had never seen a long-haired dachshund before... especially one smart enough to bark at reporters.

Sleeping Spot

Max has a new sleeping spot. Every time I come home he is up on top of the fridge with his little paws hanging off the front. I don't mind him being up there, but he always walks around on the countertops before jumping to the fridge. Mal and I unpacked some more stuff and set the bed up in the guest room. Maybe he'll move back to the bed soon.

Drive-By Shooting

I drove through Fairview Park in Decatur after an assignment this morning and thought I'd see what I could shoot without leaving my car. I prefer to think of it as a creative exercise instead of being fat and lazy. Mine!

Any time I see one of the seemingly millions of ring-billed gulls on Lake Decatur I think of Finding Nemo. "Mine! Mine! Mine!" Here's a photo of a gull landing in the middle of a group of Canada geese and mallards to snatch up a piece of bread at Nelson Park on Lake Decatur last week.

Lightning

I drove home from work in a race against a line of severe thunderstorms Monday evening. Fantastic lightning was filling the sky with bright light all around me. I finally found a good spot on the interstate to pull over and it all disappeared. Nine minutes and this little guy is all I had to show of the mighty storm. Someday I'll get a good lightning shot... someday.

Rollover

I've been listening to the police scanner a lot more than normal this week. Sometimes it's good and sometimes it's bad. Sometimes you spend a while on the scene of a rollover accident after you are already done with a full day of work and find out that the photo won't be used. Oh well... It's not the best photo in the world. It may be the best of the day, but that's not saying too much. Facebook Tweaks

Facebook unveiled their new design this morning... somehow I was able to see it last week even though nobody else could. Weird. I like it... it will take a couple of days to get used to things again, but it is a lot cleaner overall. Old Man

I went down to Charleston Friday to put on a little photo workshop for the high school students at the Illinois Press Foundation/Eastern Illinois University High School Journalism Workshop. I've helped out at the workshop for the past few years... this year I was pretty much in charge of the photo sessions. That was weird.
