State Baseball

I’m writing this blog from our luxurious room in the Super 8… I am in Joliet right now shooting Tuscola in the IHSA state baseball tournament.

They lost the game against Marissa 10-2. I still don’t understand baseball after a full season of covering the sport, so I can’t critique anyone’s performance or anything… I leave that to the experts.

The light at the beginning was nice — cloudy, but bright… no shadows… but then it kept getting darker and darker and then the rain came. They pulled the tarp out onto the field in the third inning and said it would be a short rain delay. Short turned into three hours and three minutes. Oh well.

I can handle the storms… but the stadium personnel thought it was a good idea to play some obnoxious Hillary Duff song (’Let the rain fall down… blah blah blah blah’) over the speakers every few minutes.

I might have been able to handle it a little better with some food or drink in my system… but the IHSA didn’t see the need to have anything for the media this year. Thanks, guys… glad to know we’re loved.

When they finally started the game back up it was bright and sunny and warm… and now I’m watching big rain drops bounce off the hotel window. Hopefully tomorrow is just one or the other… my sinuses can only take so much.

I’m happy for the team that they made it this far and hopefully I’ll be back next year with another team or two from our coverage area. And next time I’ll smuggle in some snacks so I don’t have to pay $8.75 for a rubbery piece of pizza and a pepsi.

Here are a few images that I turned in…

I had a feeling about the outcome of the game when the first batter in the first inning hit a home run…

There is only one spot of clean background in the entire stadium, so I waited for something to happen in front of it…

Is it sad that I was hoping one of the grounds volunteers would wipe out on the wet tarp?

I tried to get some photos during the rain delay… but nothing really worked out how I pictured it in my head.

The coach’s 6-year-old son is the team’s batboy… and he is hilarious to watch and listen to.

I don’t have many rules for shooting photos… mainly just try not to suck. But I think there should be a rule that whenever you see two men sharing a little pink umbrella you must take a picture.
