  I got to shoot a "viewing party" for a big announcement about the site selection for a $1.8 billion experimental power plant in Tuscola this morning. Danny "I'm the guy that used to be nicknamed T-Bone" Williams was there... here is proof.

  Freezing fog

  I had never heard of freezing fog until this week... pretty crazy. The moisture in the fog forms a thin, white layer of ice around things like tree branches.

  I had to sit in bumper-to-bumper traffic in Champaign Monday night on my way to the game. I normally try to get to games at least an hour early to set my computer up, grab a bite to eat and hang out with the other photographers... tonight didn't work out so well. I had a late daily assignment that had me leaving Decatur at 5:45 for my 7:00 game in Champaign. Once I got through traffic, through the parking lot and through security it was 7:10. I hate feeling rushed like that... oh well, there's not really a way around it in ...

  Rose Bowl Media Day

  I got to shoot the Rose Bowl Media Day at the U of I Sunday. Media Day is just a fancy term for boring press conference.   We finally got our new gear last week... I have to admit seeing the back of my car filled with 10 lenses, seven bodies, six flashes and a bunch of random photo gear was a sight for sore eyes. They were sore from staring through beat-up Nikon optics for the past five months... Christmas came two weeks early for the photo staff.

  Busted Nose

  You don't see this every day... at least I hope you don't. I wish I could have stuck around for a while to watch them tip the plane back upright... but I was on the run when I heard this come across the scanner so I only had a few minutes of shooting time.

  Football portrait

  I got to shoot our football player of the year portrait Tuesday... I'm about 90% satisfied with what I got, but wish I could have had a little longer to work it a bit more. He also plays basketball and had a game that night, so time was ticking as I shot this. The reporter told me a story about how this player has lost his anonymity... people seem to know him everywhere he goes. For anyone wondering, I used pocket wizards to fire the three flashes on top of the other players cameras... got the idea from a post on Strobist ...

  On the road

  I can usually find wireless internet at the big schools so I can edit and send photos from there... saves a lot of time and makes my life easier. At the smaller schools I have to pray that they have wi-fi or find it someplace else in town. I have a little list of hotspots that I keep on my computer. I found wireless access in the parking lot of Jimmy John's in Clinton after a basketball game.  I didn't even know there was a JJ in Clinton... I'm going to head inside and see if their subs are as fast as ...

  Sayonara Nikon

  Most days I'd be pretty scared if my boss called me early in the morning on the weekend and told me to pack up all of my gear and turn it in to him... But I'm pretty sure this is the day we have been waiting on for a while. I took this photo of my bag full of Nikon crap gear because it should be the last time I see it. Tonight I should be posting an update of our glorious new gear bags full of Canon bodies and lenses... hopefully everything is in stock. Or, it could be a bad day ...

  Loss

  I photographed the funeral of a local soldier Friday. I've images going through my head all weekend of his mother, staying strong through her loss... a father wiping his eyes... a girlfriend overcome with tears as Marines carry the coffin from the hearse... complete strangers standing in the freezing cold for hours with American flags to line the roads to and in the cemetery. It amazes me when I see people come together to honor one of their own. I cried like a baby as I drove through town and saw all of the businesses with messages for Cpl. Roberts on their ...
