  The Shot

  I just finished watching the first episode of "The Shot" on VH1... it's the latest reality-TV contest-type show. It's about photographers, so of course I'm going to watch it. Mal said I should enter next season... one of the prizes is a national campaign for Victoria's Secret. As much as hanging out with women in lingerie excites me, it's not the type of job I want... and I wouldn't be good at it.   Bow Ties

  I got to do a studio shoot for a story about bow ties earlier this week... it was something different, and my two "models" were pretty cool to be around. The part of the story I found most interesting: Among the findings was fewer respondents wanted the bow tie wearer in their neighborhood, as a friend or in the family. Based only on the faceless photo, more people would stay away from the bow tie man and fewer might like him. So there you go... feeling anti-social? Get yourself a bow tie.

  Hiking

  I got stuck with nine assignments today... boo to people calling in sick. Oh well, it happens. All I know is that I needed to get away for a while, so I went for a 5-mile hike instead of eating during my lunch break. I haven't had time to go out at all for a couple of months... it felt really good. The weather was perfect and the trail was empty... just what I needed to take a deep breath and relax.   Scott Strazzante is hands down one of my favorite photographers, and it's projects like this that keeps him on my list. He followed one high school volleyball team through the entire season. I don't mean just covering games, but going to their homes for movie nights... riding the bus with the team... washing the uniforms with the team manager. He was there for the highs and there for last night's lows -- the team lost to a big rival in their super-sectional. This is easily some of the best high school sports coverage I have ever seen.   Going to State

  I got to cover the IHSA Class 2A Super-Sectional in Maroa last night. They won the first set and came from behind to win the second. Now they'll be going to the state tournament in Normal Friday and Saturday... hopefully I get to go with them. This school is insane... in the past 12 months they have won the state championship for football, state championship for boys basketball and now the volleyball team is getting their chance. The football team is still in playoffs for this year's state tournament. I don't know what's in the water up there, but it seems ...

  I went down to Pana to cover the funeral of 24-year-old Brian McMillen, an Illinois State Police trooper killed on duty Sunday morning. I spent more time wiping tears from my eye than I did photographing... I was touched by so many things. I know, I know. I'm a a big emotional mess. I was amazed at the amount of fellow police officers that came to pay their respects. Our reporters counted almost 600 officers from more than 40 jurisdictions... some as far away as Texas and Colorado. There was a large amount of Air Force personnel there as well. I stood ...
