I showed up for an assignment today at a home in Decatur. A very friendly and very ugly cat rubbed against my ankles as I waited for someone to answer the door. "It's not our cat," the man said as he greeted me at the door. "You can have him." He was missing both ears, so if I did take him I would name him Mr. Stephen Van Gogh. Brody

Sure, I got to watch the Bears win in overtime, hang out with the Big 10 coach of the year and shoot some state championship football... but my favorite football memory of the weekend? Teaching Brody how to tackle. Mal and I got to hang out with Juli and Brody Friday night and I played around with him and the football for a while. From the looks of this photo I also taught him a few other things... I mean look at the grip he has on that ball.

State Championship

I got to cover the 1A championship game between Tuscola and Galena at Memorial Stadium Friday morning. Tuscola lost 35-7. This post could be about how bad Tuscola had it, missing eight players and four starters... or it could be about other newspaper photographers getting turned away from their games. I got to meet Ron Zook on the sidelines of Memorial Stadium after Tuscola's loss in the 1A game Friday morning. I wanted to tell him about how I predicted Illinois would be 9-3 this season during my bachelor party in Memphis... but he's intimidating. I don't mean intimidating in a bad way... he just has this presence about him like he just drank a barrel of coffee and chased it with a few red bulls. I got tired just standing there with him.

Tree Day

I got my first experience with Tree Day with Mal's family and the Moores Saturday. Usually I'm shooting state football, but things were different this year and I'm pretty sure Mal would have divorced me if I couldn't make it this year. Mal and I found our tree pretty quick... not so much for the adults. I don't have the expertise for trees, so they all looked about the same to me. Thanksgiving

Spending Thanksgiving day at a homeless shelter is just another day at work for me, but the thing is, I get to clock out and drive in my new, fancy car to spend time with family in a nice, heated house and eat plate after plate of turkey and noodles while watching TV and then go home to burn calories on my bike and then take a relaxing shower and then type some nonsense into this blog with my shiny computer and then fall asleep in my big bed. Ref Ass

If you are a photographer, you know what I'm talking about. I found this video on one of the message boards at sportsshooter last week... hilarious. It's amazing how someone always seems to be in someone else's way. At the Tuscola game Saturday afternoon I was moving around trying to get a clean shot without coaches, players on the sideline or refs in the way of my action. Name My Ride

Mal and I bought our first car Thursday night. It's a little earlier than we had planned, but my wreck bumped it up higher on our list. Oh well... So, after a week of test drives and dealership visits, we chose this Chevrolet Malibu MAXX LT. It's loaded with power and features that I've never had before... it has a different-looking body style, which apparently didn't sell well. Chevy is not making anymore of the MAXX model. Technical difficulties

I have had some problems posting the past couple of days. Don't worry, my computer is fine. I, on the other hand, am exhausted. In the past few days I have been to Bloomington and back (twice), gone to an Illinois game, gone out to eat with Mal's family, found out my car is being totaled by the insurance company, shot four volleyball matches, archived and burned three months of assignments from my computer, looked at about a dozen car dealerships and edited through a chunk of wedding photos. I should have been done with the wedding stuff a couple of weeks ago, ...
