I’ve been doing a lot of research and reading lately… trying to make myself a better photographer. I stumbled across this video of a presentation by James Nachtwey on YouTube tonight. I watched it twice… pretty interesting stuff.
I used to dream of traveling the world shooting the stories you see in the pages of TIME Magazine, but the older I get and the more I get involved in my community, I’m happier covering local issues and things that may have a direct impact on my family. I’m no Nachtwey, Morris, Richards, Kratchovil or Haviv… but there is no reason I can’t go out into my neighborhood and tell the stories of people around me.
I’ve been at the paper for three months… the shiny, new feeling is wearing off. I have friends who work for papers that just go in and shoot their assignments every day and go home… I know that’s my job, so I’m not going to stop doing that, but I don’t want to just stop there. I am always looking for stories, and they usually make good things for the paper. Hopefully I can find the one for me to work on soon..
Sorry for the written pep-talk that is of no interest to anyone else, but I’m really trying to push myself right now and it’s pretty much all I can think about.
