I got to shoot a candle light memorial service Wednesday night for a high school English teacher that died last week. I haven’t shot a news assignment since I’ve been back from the honeymoon, and haven’t shot something sad in months.

I won’t lie… it was tough.

Watching the way the students and staff at the school interacted with each other was something that you rarely see… for those moments they were standing there outside the school as equals to mourn the passing of a life, not as teachers and kids. Instead of hall passes and report cards there were hugs and words of support.

One student even said that she wanted to be an English major in college because of this teacher. I think it’s really special when one person has that kind of an impact on someone. I’ve had a couple of people that have changed the course of my life, and I can’t imagine what I would be doing right now if it weren’t for them.

I didn’t have a chance to know Mrs. Amy Robling, but she sounds like an incredible woman that touched many lives.
