Free Air

A machine for free air at the Citgo station on Illinois Route 16 east of Mattoon, Ill., Friday, July 20, 2007.

I had to stop to properly inflate the tires on my car tonight on my way home from work.

The “FREE AIR” label made me start thinking.

How can places charge for air? They don’t own the air. I guess they can charge you for the service of compressing it for you, but it still doesn’t seem right.

Besides… if I had $0.75 in my pocket, which sometimes is all I have, I would probably go to the station with “free” air and then run inside and grab a drink. It seems like shop owners would stand to make more money from purchases than from air.

Maybe I’m totally wrong.

Does anyone else waste time thinking about this stuff?
