European Starling / February 15, 2007 // Mattoon, Ill.
I should be asleep now, but I’m nervous about going to the doctor in 9.5 hours, so I’m going to write about birds instead.
I made it out to Douglas Hart today. I did the cheat version of birdwatching… from inside the nature center. I like birds (a lot) but I’m not really into the whole sub-zero windchill thing.
The woods were covered in snow and ice, so the feeders were crazy. The usual Mourning Doves, American Goldfinches, Northern Cardinals and English Sparrows were there… but I also saw White-Throated Sparrows, White Crowned Sparrows, Tree Sparrows, Song Sparrows, Hairy Woodpeckers, Downy Woodpeckers, Red-Bellied Woodpeckers, Blue Jays, European Starlings, Carolina Wrens, Dark-Eyed Juncos and one crow. There were also a few fat squirrels mooching off of the birdfeeders — one was completely inside a jar feeder. It was pretty funny to watch.
As much as I loved being able to shoot everything from indoors, I can’t wait for it to warm up so I can get back out on the trails and spot them for real.
And now some more birds for you to look at after the jump:
