Screech Owl / December 15, 2006 // Newton, Ill.
We found this Screech Owl sleeping in a wood duck nesting box along the side of the road south of Newton, Ill., during the bird count on the 15th.
I held on to these photos because I couldn’t publish them before they appeared in the paper… now I’m way behind.
Anyways — this guy was dead to the world. I crept up to about twenty feet away from him and he never moved.
It’s rare to catch a glimpse of screech owls in daylight, so this is by far one of my favorite photos of 2006.
