Tailgating

Tailgating / October 21, 2006 // Charleston, Ill. I hate being a work-a-holic. I went to tailgating and had a great time with Mal and the girls from her sorority. I got to hang out with a bunch of newsroom people and newsroom alumni. The weather was beautiful for tailgating. So what's my problem? I didn't "cover" the tailgating activities, and that makes the work-a-holic side of my brain hurt. I've been trying to get a better balance between work and life... it's tough for me. Pancake breakfast

Pancake Breakfast / October 21, 2006 // Charleston, Ill. I was at work until almost 2:30 a.m. Saturday morning, so I couldn't get motivated to get up early and shoot the parade. It sounds like I didn't miss much. Quite a few people told me that the parade was one of the worst in years -- only a couple marching bands, boring floats, etc. I did make it to the pancake breakfast. I'm normally not a pancake guy, but I always look forward to Homecoming pancakes. The Rotary club must have a secret recipe.

Pep rally

Mr. Belding / October 20, 2006 // Charleston, Ill. The 2006 Homecoming pep rally Friday night was pretty cool. It was interesting to see three members from the class of 1956 there for the rally. 1956 was the last year that the school was known as Eastern Illinois State Teacher's College... it changed to EIU the next year. Anyway, it probably would have made a great feature story that will never happen in a local newspaper. I kind of wish that an effort would have been made to recognize coach Spoo and wish him well in his recovery... or a message from him... ...

Gull / October 16, 2006 // Allenville, Ill. I've been too busy to go out and take new pictures... so you're stuck with a photo of a gull flying over the Kaskaskia River near Allenville on Monday afternoon. Homecoming is this weekend... Gloomy days

Raindrops / October 16, 2006 // Allenville, Ill. This is what the weather was like yesterday. Of course, I still went out hiking in it out at the Kaskaskia River Fish and Wildlife Management Area... I didn't come back with very many good photos. It was a light sprinkle when I parked my car, so I figured I'd be OK. By the time I had hiked down the trail, around the cornfield and across the levee it started to pour. I had to go to work soaked and covered in mud. Ring-Billed Gulls

Ring-Billed Gulls / October 13, 2006 // Mattoon, Ill. Migration seems to be in full effect right now. I'm loving it. I'm finding different kinds of birds every day. These are Ring-Billed Gulls that I found out at Lake Paradise Friday afternoon. I'm usually not happy if I don't get close and tight in my photos, but this one makes me smile every time I see it. Football experiment

Illinois Football / October 14, 2006 // Champaign, Ill. I shot the Illinois football game over the weekend. It was mainly for practice before I do state football next month, but I also wanted to play around with a few things. Poulter said this shot was about right since Illinois seemed to be a few steps behind during the game. I shot an entire quarter at 1/10th of a second, which for those of you that don't know, is an eternity for a photograph. I normally shoot at 1/500th of a second at Memorial Stadium. Lake Paradise Dam / October 13, 2006 // Mattoon, Ill. I tried out a technique called "panography" Friday afternoon. Basically, you make a panoramic photo out of a bunch of normal photos. I think it turned out to be pretty cool. I decided to run it on our photo page in the paper this week. Jeff did a wonderful job with the page, so I'm going to show it to you here... Beautiful day

Lens Flare / October 12, 2006 // Charleston, Ill. We didn't get any of the rain that was forecast for today. It wasn't perfect -- It was cold and extremely windy -- but it could have been much, much worse. While I was editing down my images from the day, this photo jumped out at me for some reason. I think lens flare is fun sometimes.
