Big moon

Moon / October 31, 2006 // Mattoon, Ill. I went out to my car tonight while I was at work and noticed that I could actually see the moon. The weather has been kind of gloomy for the past few nights -- it was a nice surprise. I used the scope setup to shoot this... I'm impressed at how sharp that thing is. In the original file on my big monitor I can see some amazing details in the craters on the surface.

Jack-o-lantern

Jack-o-Lantern / October 31, 2006 // Charleston, Ill. I carved my first jack-o-lantern tonight. I don't think it turned out too bad. The only thing I can think about after this little project -- who on Earth decided that pumpkins could be used as food? I cut that thing open and lost any appetite I had.

Windy day

American Goldfinch / October 30, 2006 // Mattoon, Ill. The weather was incredible, so I went out to a few places to look for birds today. I think it was a little too windy. I only found a few birds -- including this American Goldfinch -- out at the Douglas Hart Nature Center, which is normally crawling with hundreds of birds. There's a chance for rain tomorrow, but the rest of the week looks pretty good. UPDATE: It looks like this Goldfinch is about to attack the Heron from the post below...

Get closer

Great Blue Heron / October 30, 2006 // Charleston, Ill. I inched my way to within about 30 feet of a Great Blue Heron today at Lake Charleston. Heron are usually pretty stand-offish, so I was really surprised that I got this close. As much as I love birds and appreciate the beauty in detailed markings... this is an ugly bird.

Egret

Great Egret / October 29, 2006 // Charleston, Ill. I went out to Lake Charleston Sunday to watch the birds. The lake was fairly empty except for this Egret and a Great Blue Heron. Once again, the Heron photo is better, but it's vertical. Nora thinks that I have taken dozens of photos of the same Heron. That would be a sad, sad trick on me if it was the truth.

Old Photo / 2002 // Charleston, Ill. After Romo's 35-14 win tonight I started looking for some of my old photos from the Daily Eastern News from when Romo was still here. Man I sucked... granted, it was my freshman year... I was shooting on cheap film that was developed in cheap chemicals. But seriously, I wouldn't line a bird cage with this kind of material. Panthers / October 21, 2006 // Charleston, Ill. I'm watching the Sunday night game between Carolina and Dallas right now. Tony Romo is the starting quarterback for the Cowboys this week, and the announcers love him. They just showed a graphic with the three NFL head coaches that are EIU alumni, and then called EIU the new "cradle of coaches"... I've heard that reference before, but only with in-state newspapers. Now I'm seeing and hearing it on national television during Sunday night football. This is crazy. This would be a heck of a night to play the Tony Romo Drinking Game. I could probably start ...

Measuring Cup / October 28, 2006 // Charleston, Ill. I've never been a big fan of Halloween. A few years ago I was Peter Parker. I went as a tourist the next year. This year I decided to leave the camera in the car and be something awful... a Republican. Mal was a "sexy" chef. She wore a black dress, threw on some fishnet stockings and an apron and it turned into a costume. Drinking out of a measuring cup was a nice touch. ("I just drank 1/8 cup of beer!") Girls have it easy with costumes -- all they have to do is ...
