A flock of Sandhill Cranes descend on the Kaskaskia River Fish and Wildlife Management Area near Allenville, Ill.
So I know I said I would update yesterday… but I’m busy. I’m sure all four of you reading this can understand that.
I’m swamped at work right now… Jeff and I are re-designing the website, photos are starting to come in for the grad section, I’ve shot a lot of nasty spot news, I’ve had a few meetings more than normal for the website… it’s getting kind of crazy.
I’m not used to actually being busy here at work. I kind of like it.
In one week there have been a pair of nasty wrecks, three house fires, a barn fire and today a man was crushed when his house collapsed on him. I feel like I’m back up in the suburbs again… it seems like all I photographed was baseball and fatal wrecks.
Enough work stuff - let’s talk about birds.
I’ve seen a few thousand birds over the past few days.
When I went out birding with Tim on Sunday, we spooked some Mallards, and when they took off, it literally sounded like a helicopter flying overhead. It was one of the coolest things I have seen or heard in a long time.
We also saw about 50 Sandhill Cranes, which are not a common sight in Illinois. I was pretty happy with that.
Saturday I went to Douglas-Hart to hike around and look at birds. Sunday I hiked around and looked at birds. Monday I cursed some birds for using the roof of my car as a toilet. Today I went out hiking and looked at birds. Chances are I’ll probably go out tomorrow and look at birds.
I’ve started saving for a spotting scope that can hook up to a camera… then I’ll have some real bird pictures for you.

just to let you know, sandhill cranes were next to extinct in wisconson about a decade ago, and now they are back in full force.
so maybe you will start seeing more and more of them.
