Crazy weather

My hand is twice the size of Mal.

I find it ironic that we went all through January, all through Februrary and almost all the way through March without snow. Now tonight, on the first day of Spring, we have a winter storm warning.

Yesterday, Mal and I were flying kites under mostly sunny skies, and tomorrow when I wake up I could be shoveling 5-8 inches of snow off my steps. Well, I won’t be shoveling, but I could be watching someone else shovel it.

I got to go home over the weekend… it was nice to see the family. Mom, Gretchen and I went out to the boardwalk on Lake Vermilion and saw some fun stuff — hundreds of geese, some red-winged blackbirds, a few great blue herons, a couple river otters and a couple hawks. Not a bad way to spend the day.

This was my first time on the boardwalk since the observation tower was raised. Gretchen and I went up to the top even though the sign said it was closed. We’re such rebels.

I wrote earlier that I’m on a big bird kick lately. I took a few hundred photos of birds this weekend. Nothing spectacular, but I found a bird at the Carman Hall pond that was unusual. It’s some kind of heron, but I don’t know what kind. Either way, it’s still not common to see one on campus. I made a set of wildlife photos on my flickr page.

With all of this crazy weather, I get to post all of the school closings on the newspaper’s Web site… I know you’re jealous. I get to stay in here until early morning all by myself. I’m living the life.

Oh well… I guess I can waste time figuring out what kind of heron it is that I photographed earlier today.
