Big Kid

What a difference four weeks can make. At the beginning of the month our little guy was on the small side… 14 ounces. This morning he weighed one pound and 14 ounces.

Strangely, now he’s almost a little big for his age. He must get that from his dad.

Other things he gets from his dad… feet the size of scuba flippers, an adorable button nose, bulging biceps and rugged good looks.

Things he hopefully gets from his mom… two earlobes and the ability to focus on one thing for more than three seconds.

His heart was beating strong and everything looked good. His heartrate was 146 bpm…

BABY BELLYMallory is doing great too… all of her measurements are right on track. Her vitals are all looking good, so it’s smooth sailing right now.

Her belly really started to look pregnant a couple weeks ago after baby’s big growth spurt. It really seems like it all kind of happened overnight.

The whole thing started to feel real when we saw him for the first time a couple months ago… felt better hearing his heartbeat… even better seeing him the second and third time. I think the best part is being able to feel him kick. I love it. I’m sure Mal is starting to get tired of it, especially since he seems to be most active right when she’s going to bed.

I’m sure there are more things to talk about, but my mind is starting to wander. Hopefully sometime this week I’ll get time to tell you about the name I’ve picked out…

It’s a Boy!

We had our second ultra-sound today…It’s a BOY! We don’t have a name picked out yet. We have a few that have made “the list” (they are a secret!), but we aren’t planning on actually picking one until he is born.

When the sonogram started the baby had his feet & legs tucked up really tightly against his bottom and he wasn’t budging, so we were afraid that we weren’t going to be able to find out the sex. Luckily, the sonographer got him to move a little bit…I don’t think Steve could have handled waiting another month to find out!

The baby and I are both healthy. They did the full anatomy check on the baby today- the heart has all the chambers, umbilical cord has all the vessels, nose & lips look fine, etc. It was hard for them to get a good look at the spine, but it looked good as far as they could tell. His heartbeat was 160 bpm – just one slower than last time.

He is a little on the small side – in the 29th percentile for size, but our midwife says not to be worried. We are going to have another sonogram in four weeks to check the baby’s size. If he is in the 10th percentile or below at that time we have to call in the doctor. I’m not really worried about it though – I am convinced they just have my due date wrong by a couple of days. We will see!

I am at 21 weeks and 3 days now, and I have gained 7 pounds so far. Karen, our midwife/nurse practitioner, says that is perfect. That was nice to hear, because I was starting to worry that I haven’t been gaining enough weight. She said that she expects me to gain a little over 20 pounds for the whole pregnancy.

We got some more pictures this time, but they aren’t as good as the first ones. Hopefully we will be able to get some better pictures at our next visit on March 30.

HAAS Mallory 020109

Mal had another check-up at the doctor today. Today is 17-weeks and three days. Everything is good and seems to be normal… found out Mal can take some cold medicine (as long as it’s Tylenol-brand) to feel better and it won’t hurt the baby.

We have to wait four more weeks for the next ultrasound, which will hopefully tell us if what we are expecting. I don’t know if I can wait that long… although I guess I don’t have much of a choice. I’m pretty sure none of my camera gear can see through skin.

The nurse let us hear the heartbeat, though. For the people who try to figure out the sex with the heartbeat it came in as 161 beats per minute. Take a listen below… I’ve been playing it over and over for a while now. Unbelievable.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

I wish I kept recording… the nurse moved the little-baby-heartbeat-measurement-thingy and it made a funny sound that resembled a growling bear.

Meet the Fetus

So… this morning was one of the greatest moments I’ve ever had. Seeing this greyish-blob on the screen suddenly made everything seem real.

We had a checkup at the doctor today. Everything looks good with Mallory and the baby, which I am calling “the fetus” until we find out if it is a boy or girl.

I know it’s hard to see what’s going on in the photo above, but I bet trying to take a picture of something just a little bigger than a LEGO mini-figure through a woman’s innards is a bit harder than it looks. I have some of the latest photo editing equipment and software, but I can’t find the “Remove womb gunk” filter to try to make the photo any sharper. Sorry, that’s the best it’s going to get for now.

Mallory is in her 13th week, so the due date is still set for July 11.

We went browsing for baby things over the weekend… strollers and car-seats are so much cooler than what I remember me and my little sisters being pushed around in. Some of these things have better tires and upholstery than my car… pretty crazy.

Here are the other four photos from the ultrasound, pay no attention to the last one… it’s kind of scary looking. It’s reminds me of those 3D puzzles where you have to focus a few inches behind it to actually see what is going on. At first it looked like some kind of stunt double from Star Trek or something… but the more I look at it the more I see the Grateful Dead logo.

Bun in the Oven

We’ve been holding onto a secret for the past few weeks… Looks like we’re going to be turning the guest room into a nursery.

Sorry for the bad photo of the home pregnancy test, but I can’t make myself motivated to shoot a plastic stick that Mallory peed on last month. I’ve ben holding onto it so I could take a picture for this update to the blog, but apparently the colors start to fade after a while. The blue plus sign was much more prominent when she took the test.

Oh well… none of that really matters.

The doctors have put the due date as July 11… 7-11 should be pretty easy to remember.

Hopefully I can convince Mal to write some updates about baby news… I feel weird talking about ovaries and placentas and fetus development. Heck, I never took sex ed in school, so for all I know a stork brings a baby in a basket when God decides that two people love each other enough to have a baby.

I was going to write about how Mal gets to do all the easy stuff… rest/relaxation, wearing comfortable stretchy clothes, extra eating, etc. I honestly can’t even joke around about that though… I have absolutely no idea what she is going through.

Hopefully I can be around to help her with whatever she needs. Taco Bell run? Check. Pickles and ice cream? You got it. Being married to a ridiculously-good looking guy? Done.

We’ll post more news here on the blog as things progress…
